the climb.

ain't about how fast i get there
ain't about what's waiting on the other side
it's the climb

some hate it, some love it... whatever. it's catchy. i think we all fall into the "i know every single word to this song, yet have no clue what it's saying or that it totally goes against what i believe" category sometimes. when i considered the words to this song, i thought "miley, this is stupid". now i think she's on to something.

i listened to a sermon by Andy Stanley on my way to NC yesterday. (if you don't subscribe to his podcast, you should. it's great for long drives.) the series on the podcast right now is "destination". in the first sermon he looked at the young man with no judgement in proverbs 7. it's not that this man's an idiot, but that he's young and hasn't had a chance yet to learn judgement. he didn't start his day by saying "i'm going to have an affair with a married woman today." but neither did he start his day by having a plan of how to walk in purity. we all have goals for our lives. i have a goal to get fit, get rid of my love handles, tone my muscles, eat right; but no matter how good my intentions are, no matter how much i want that or see that for my life, every time i eat fried chicken or drink that coke, every time i choose sleep or tv over working out, i totally negate my intentions. it's never going to work if my actions don't match up with my intentions. andy gave other illustrations, like: a parent who is determined to be the kind of parent that spends quality time with the family, goes on family vacations every year, and chooses to work all the time to "prepare" for those days will never reach that goal. i'm never going to have the relationship with Christ i want if i keep choosing everything else instead.

so all that to say, it is about the climb. but it's also about what's waiting on the other side. you'll never get to the destination you want without taking the right path up that mountain. this young man may have wanted purity for his life, but he got on one wrong path that lead to another and another, and now he has no clue what path he's on... only that he'll never make it to his original destination now.

  1. I love that song! And I believe with all my heart that you should just climb the elliptical every time you want some fried chicken. Then you can have friend chicken after... because you're still burning calories. GENIUS!!!!!!!

  2. friend chicken, Emily? If that's the case, remind me never to come over for dinner....

B, this is so good! Thanks for the reminder to be intentional about all my actions and put into practice what I believe on principle. Ahh...a daily struggle. Glad you're blogging!
